Cones are not generated de novo during the period of extra proliferation in the p27 knockout (KO) retinas. KO mice were treated with BrdU at P6 or daily from P7 to P11, and the fate of proliferating cells analyzed at P12. Double labeling for BrdU and S-opsin shows no colocalization.
