In our terminology, once the cap has completely detached from the core, the latter is called the neurogenic niche as in adults (Sullivan et al., 2007a, b). The cap becomes the medial proliferative zone. Note that compared to the cap, very few cells are in S-phase in the protoniche (arrowheads in C, E, F).
